Managing Theme Updates

Hi again,

The last time we updated Sydney Pro, our Appearance > Customizer settings were lost and we had to re-configure all our settings…home page slider, menu, page wrapper settings, and colors, fonts & sizes, etc. So now I’m a little gun-shy about theme updates; isn’t our child theme supposed to prevent all that? Possibly we did something incorrect while updating the theme? Is there something we should be doing in our child theme so we don’t have to completely re-customize after theme updates? Or was the last time an isolated incident?

Thanks again for your help,

Sam

Hello there,

It looks like the configurations you’ve done in the customizer can’t be automatically transferred to your child theme. Please try to follow these steps to do manual synchronization:

  1. Install and activate this plugin
  2. Activate your parent theme (Sydney Pro)
  3. Go to Appearance > Customize > Export/Import and click on Export. You will automatically download a file
  4. Activate your child theme again
  5. Then navigate to Appearance > Customize > Export/Import. Upload the exported customizer settings file

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Kharis

Thank you Kharis, but yeesh…really? IMHO Automattic has some work to do here.

Your step-by-step makes it seem that BB’s plugin ex-imports Customizer mods from the parent to the child theme, is that how it works? In other words, once we’ve done steps 1-5, do we need to worry about our Customizer settings the next time we need to upgrade our theme?

Oh, and during which of your steps 1-5 do we run the upgrade to our parent theme?
