How can I center non-header content area when it does not take up the full page-width?

In my CSS, using this rule

.content-area {
        width: 85% !important;
    }

and then trying to center the content area using either

.content .content-wrapper {
	margin: 0 auto !important;
}
    .page-wrapper {
	margin: 0 auto !important;
}

does not work. How can I center the content area block?
