Google pagespeed issue with latest news widgets

hi there,
when i run the pagespeed insights tool, the thumbnails in sydney wp latest news widget are causing this:
Properly formatting and compressing images can save many bytes of data.
Optimize the following images to reduce their size by 70.9KiB (76% reduction).
Compressing and resizing http://mojzastopnik.si/…ntent/uploads/pot-v-neznano-550x400.jpeg could save 29.6KiB (78% reduction).
Compressing and resizing http://mojzastopnik.si/…loads/kako-se-naj-zavarujem-550x400.jpeg could save 24.8KiB (77% reduction).
Compressing and resizing http://mojzastopnik.si/…ičar-marketingar-in-nogomet-550x400.jpeg could save 16.6KiB (73% reduction).

I have run all the images trough wp smush and still get the same result. Is there a way to fix this but so that the image on the post page stays the same size?

thank you

Hi,

Google gives you that hint, to optimise your images, so if you reduce the image quality then it won’t give you that error / notification, so please replace those images with optimised images.

Hi,
Yeah, that is why i ran all of them woth wp smush. If i change the size of the image it looks funny when you open that post.
Any other images are fine, just this 3 on my front page (mojzastopnik.si) are giving me this result. On mobile eveything is fine, but in the desktop mode it is not.
Is there a code i could use to get rid of this problem?

Hi,

You don’t have to change the size of the image, just you have to optimise the image.

Could you please tell me how to that other then wp smush?

Thanks

Hi,

You can optimise your images ( for lower file size ) in Photoshop too ( for example ), so if you save a .jpeg image from Photoshop you can choose the quality, so by dragging the quality down a little bit, so from maximum to high for example you can get an image that is less then half in size, but still a high quality, dragging it to Medium instead of high may affect more the image file’s size, so go down for a quality which gives you an image under 2-300kb, under that you may not get any image optimisation errors.

Thanks for that. But non of my images is bigger than around 100kb. It’s a problem with sydney-medium-thumb that is causing this. Somehow google pagespeed thinks it should be 273x199 instead of 550x400…whan i or we do to get rid of that problem?

Regards.

Hi,

You can change the sydney-medium-thumb size in functions.php, line 51, in this code:

add_image_size('sydney-medium-thumb', 550);

after changing the thumb’s width, please use this plugin to regenerate your thumbnails:

hi!
thank you for getting back at me.
i did what you said, now i get this message:
Optimize the following images to reduce their size by 67.8KiB (77% reduction).
Compressing and resizing http://mojzastopnik.si/…ntent/uploads/pot-v-neznano-550x367.jpeg could save 28.1KiB (78% reduction).
Compressing and resizing http://mojzastopnik.si/…loads/kako-se-naj-zavarujem-550x366.jpeg could save 24KiB (77% reduction).
Compressing and resizing http://mojzastopnik.si/…ičar-marketingar-in-nogomet-550x366.jpeg could save 15.7KiB (73% reduction).

Going nuts here
Can i change the thumb size for this widget with css to 273x199?
if you could provide such code i would be very grateful.

Regards

Hi,

After changing the thumbnail size have you regenerated the thumbnails using the plugin? Also, please access the images the error gives you and remove those images, because they seems to be in your image uploads folder, so you have to manually delete these thumbs from the folder on your server.

Hi,

I’ve opened this again as I have the same issue.

The issue is due to Sydney Theme downsizing the featured image to 550 and this is what Page Speed is picking up.

Hey there,
I’ve got the same results happening with my site (pawsinmotionla.com) even though I’ve resized them to the correct dimensions and optimized them fully using tinypng.com. It seems the resize values confuse the PageSpeed analysis. But I’m not sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

You can modify the 550px size if you want to in the above mentioned code / process, if that’s something what’s not good and / or correct for you or also you can delete that code if you don’t want to generate those thumbnails / sizes.

Csaba
