Footer keeps returning to default

Hi,
I keep editing my footer but after a few days it reverts back to the default "proudly powered by Sydney Wordpress"
I need to include a legal disclaimer in my footer: how do I make sure that my edited footer stays in place?
Thanks in advance,
Kim

Hi Kim,

Based on what you’ve written, it looks like you edited the main theme’s file. Thus all files are overridden once the theme is updated. To retain the modifications, you have to do it in the child theme. The first thing to do is creating a child theme, or download our premade one here. Copy the footer.php file from main theme and then paste into child theme’s folder. Then you can start editing from there. Once you are done, install and activate the child theme.

Thank you, Kharis.
Will installing the child theme disrupt my website? It is already live.
Kim

It shouldn’t. But if it does, please read this documentation. In your case, as you are using the free version, in the step 3, replace sydney with sydney-child, which is the name of the child theme’s folder.

Kharis
